Early this spring, I will be teaching a series of master classes in unarmed stage combat to undergraduate theatre students at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. At present, students do not have the luxury of taking a class of this nature within their normal curriculum; but special offerings like this are designed to enhance the student’s overall learning experience. Any students who take a particular interest of course are encouraged to continue to seek out opportunities to study, either through private lessons here in Lexington or by attending several of the regional workshops hosted by the SAFD throughout the year. The class will serve as a basic introduction to unarmed stage combat with particular focus on acting the fight. It will also include an exploration of some of the challenges posed to fight directors and choreographers by modern audiences and will culminate in the students’ performance of a fight in front of their peers.
